Māui Mataora

A framework for live streaming tangihanga with cultural integrity

The Māui Mataora model was developed by Dr Te Anga Nathan and built upon the Kaupapa Māori research from early models such as Te Whare Tapa Whā (Durie, 1984) and Te Wheke (Pere, 1997).  The Māui Mataora model is a systematic guide to help Māori live stream tangihanga virtually and with integrity.

The model is named after the Māori demigod Māui tikitiki-a-Taranga. Mata means medium of communication, ora means alive — together, Mataora speaks to living communication.

The five elements:

Māui Mua - Whakaute (Respect)

Respect for the deceased and the whānau pani is the foundation of every decision.

Māui Roto - Te Reo me ngā Tikanga (Language and Custom)

The live stream must reflect Māori language and cultural practice.

Māui Taha - Hangarau (Technology)

Choosing the right platform and tools to protect the privacy and mana of the tangihanga.

Māui Pae - Kawa (Protocol)

Establishing clear guidelines for what can and cannot be recorded and shared.

Māui tikitiki-a-Taranga - E-Tangihanga (The Live Stream)

Bringing all five elements together to stream with integrity.

The three principles:

Kia tika — do it right. Kia pono — do it with integrity. Kia Māori — do it the Māori way.
